Repro Shabbat Resources

Reproductive freedom is a Jewish value.

Judaism offers a critical perspective on reproductive freedom that is too often unheard in our public discourse.

Rooted in Jewish values of kavod habriyot (human dignity), pikuach nefesh (the obligation to protect life), and rachamim(compassion), Chevrei Tzedek affirms reproductive freedom as a matter of justice and care. Judaism recognizes the moral complexity of reproductive decision-making and upholds the right of individuals to make informed choices about their own bodies and health. Through learning, advocacy, and action, our community works to ensure access to comprehensive reproductive care and to support those whose reproductive autonomy is under threat.

National Conservative Jewish Women (NCJW)/Haddasah Repro Shabbat

Repro Shabbat is an annual Shabbat celebration that honors the Jewish value of reproductive freedom. It takes place annually on Parshat Mishpatim, which contains the verses commonly referenced as the foundation of Judaism’s approach to reproductive health, rights, and justice. Individuals and communities across the world gather to celebrate Repro Shabbat and the Jewish traditions it honors. Chevrei Tzedek participates in this annual tradition by hosting a ReproShabbat program on this Shabbat, followed by a kiddush luncheon and a speaker who brings local and relevant perspectives to this conversation for our congregation.  Repro Shabbat is a time for communities and individuals to connect, educate, and activate towards a more just future.

Each year, Chevrei Tzedek joins NCJW in the national ReproShabbat Campaign to expand access to abortion and reproductive health care, under their program called Jews for Abortion Access. Chevrei promotes these national programs within our congregation, which are often online. To learn more at Jews for Abortion Access

Women’s Health Center of Western Maryland

Chevrei Tzedek partners with the Women’s Health Center of Maryland, to support women who seek abortions by providing comfort kits for post-abortion care. Women’s Health Center of Maryland is a safe and affirming clinic that offers a full range of reproductive and sexual healthcare to the people of Mountain Maryland and beyond. WHC MD opened in September 2023 in response to urgent healthcare needs following the fall of Roe v. Wade. In just two years, it has become a vital reproductive healthcare provider for Western Maryland and a safe haven for patients traveling from states where abortion services are no longer available.

The clinic provides medication and procedural abortion care, as well as comprehensive services including annual wellness exams, birth control access, gender-affirming hormone therapy, STI testing and treatment, and pregnancy confirmation. WHC MD has received national recognition for its impact, including coverage from The Baltimore Banner- WHC and The New York Times- WHC, and was recently invited by Gloria Steinem to host a Talking Circle in her home. As attacks on reproductive freedom continue to increase, WHC MD remains committed to ensuring access to compassionate, comprehensive reproductive healthcare for Mountain Maryland residents and individuals from surrounding states.
